“Where do I start....On arrival, Me and my Friend David were met by a very friendly Abi and shortly after his wife Kate. They both made us feel very comfortable. shortly after, the rest of the group arrived. In total there were 6.
We all briefly discussed our reasons for being there. My personal reason was from a furniture development project I have been working on. My aim was to get a feel for what was involved in reanimating wood into various different forms.

Abi and Kate were incredibly enthusiastic about their craft and it showed. Initially I was a bit overwhelmed at what was required.

All the magic happens in a very short time frame of two minutes.
However with some very careful planning incredible results can be achieved.

Wood bending is very much an organic craft. It does not conform to a precise plan. So be prepared to get creative when you try taming the pieces of carefully selected wood.

All in all, I think the day was a huge success. There were highs...Finally getting my desired steamed shape to pop from the wood former and into my carefully created machined slots (amazing food too) and lows... My realisation you can not run before you can walk haha.

I have left with the determination to create the very best forming jigs for Unidexters (I am a lower arm amputee) as it is not easy taming wood so 5 pairs of hands is a must. Alternatively work as a team and achieve great results together.

We did a day stool making class with Abi and Kate.

The day started with a relaxed walk through the woods where Abi and Kate taught us some fascinating facts about trees. This really helped set the vibe of the day and get us excited to start making.

We then begun making the stool. Starting with Abi and Kate helping us come up with a design through to the finished product whilst learning some great facts and trying out lots of fun techniques.

Abi and Kate’s passion for wood making is infectious, they are masters of their craft and happily share their knowledge in a way that was easily understood by a beginner like myself.

I’m really happy with the finished stool, it’s exactly what I would have chosen to buy and I can’t believe that I made it myself!
