Kanawa Tsugi 1

One in a series of ancient Japanese joinery techniques scaled up.

Made from rescued variegated Ebony wood.

'Kanawa Tsugi 1' is one in a continuing series of sculptures scaling up ancient Japanese joinery.

50% of Ebony trees are left to rot on the forest floor upon felling, because marbled-streaks are classified as not ‘pure black’. ‘Kanawa Tsugi 1’ juxtaposes the old world and new value systems. For centuries, Ebony was lusted after for its exotic rarity veiled in mystery.

Today by contrast, GenerationZ values ‘radical transparency’ to guarantee ethical and sustainable behaviour. The sculpture’s embedded NFC chip digitally preserves its provenance and will record its future-heritage, using the blockchain. This breakthrough technology emotionally connects us to the stories of the people, plants and places that went into the craft piece, provenance.org verified.

If you have a sculpture you’d like commissioned let’s talk. Perhaps for your home, yacht or business lobby.
